How to Build a Game-Day Spread That Won’t Leave You Crashing by Halftime
[Disclosure: This post features my partners Taste Republic, Libby’s Vegetables, G2G Bar and Loam. All opinions are my own.]
Football season is here, and so are the snacks. If your game-day spread usually leaves you slumped on the couch by halftime, you’re not alone. Chips, dips and soda are basically a blood sugar roller coaster: a quick spike, then a crash right around the second quarter.
I joined Good Morning Texas [air date] to share my favorite healthy game day snacks: a spread that still feels like a party but actually fuels you. And no, I’m not telling you to skip the chips.
My Game-Day Rule: Don’t Skip the Chips. Pair Them.
Here’s the formula I use with my clients, and it works just as well at a tailgate: pair crunchy carbs with protein and fiber. Protein and fiber slow digestion, which keeps your blood sugar steadier. Steadier blood sugar means steady energy all game long, and no halftime crash.
Every single thing on this table follows that rule. Here’s how I built it.
Chips That Are Secretly Pasta
Let’s start with the star of the show. These look like chips, but they’re actually Taste Republic Four Cheese Tortelloni, tossed with olive oil, Italian seasoning and basil, then air fried until golden and crunchy. They’re one of my favorite swaps because each serving packs 12 grams of protein, so your “chip” is already doing double duty.
Taste Republic is fresh, restaurant-quality pasta with a true al dente bite, and it cooks in under five minutes. All of their pasta is certified gluten-free, but here’s what I love most: you’re not making a separate “gluten-free dish” for one person. You make one great pasta the whole table loves, with zero trade-off in taste or texture. It’s also independently third-party tested and confirmed pesticide free, and there’s plenty of variety, from classics like this tortelloni to new seasonal flavors.
You’ll find it at H-E-B, Sprouts and Whole Foods across Texas.
Every Chip Needs a Dip
My Touchdown Corn & Feta Dip is the perfect partner for those tortelloni chips. Greek yogurt and feta bring the protein, and Libby’s Whole Kernel Corn brings the fiber (plus that sweet, charred flavor if you take an extra three minutes to toast it in a skillet).
People are sometimes surprised that a dietitian reaches for canned vegetables, but I absolutely do. Canned vegetables are a convenient, low-cost way to add nutrition to everyday meals. Libby’s is my go-to because they’re grown and packed in the USA with simple ingredients: just vegetables, water and sea salt. That’s it.

A Halftime Board That Won’t Make Kids Wired
Kids graze all game long, so I build their board to keep them full, not bouncing off the walls. Think protein, fiber and lots of color. [Add what else was on your board, e.g., cheese cubes, berries, cucumbers.]
The anchor of the board is G2G bars cut into bite-size squares. Snack overwhelm is real, especially in the middle of fall sports season, and G2G is my go-to protein bar recommendation because it makes things easy. They taste great and actually do a job, without the sugar crash.
What sets them apart is that they’re made with real, perishable ingredients and kept refrigerated. That’s why they’re soft and chewy instead of dry and chalky. They still travel well, too, lasting 30 days outside the fridge, so they can live in your sports bag. G2G crushes their peanuts in-house, uses no artificial sweeteners or fillers, and sweetens naturally with honey, brown rice syrup and coconut sugar. Each bar delivers 18 grams of protein for muscle recovery, healthy fats from nut butter to keep you full, and gluten-free oats for steady energy.
Grab them at 7-Eleven and Central Market.
A Mocktail With a Secret
Finally, a drink. My Game Day Fiber Mocktail is a better swap for soda or beer: sparkling water, a splash of 100% cranberry or orange juice, fresh citrus, and one scoop of Loam Prebiotic Fiber Formula.
Fiber in a cocktail? I promise you can’t taste it. Loam has no taste and no texture, and it dissolves in hot or cold drinks. Each scoop adds 10 grams of prebiotic fiber to support digestive regularity and gut health. It’s a clean, six-ingredient blend with no artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors or preservatives, and it’s third-party tested.
My tip: if you’re new to fiber supplements, start with half a scoop and build up from there. Your gut will thank you.
The Bottom Line
Game-day food doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Keep the crunch, keep the fun, and pair your carbs with protein and fiber. You’ll stay energized through the fourth quarter, and you won’t need a nap before the post-game show.
